A woman police inspector-in-charge (IIC) was allegedly attacked and detained by miscreants while raiding a gambling den at Udaypur village under Balasore’s Bhogarai block.
The incident was reported on late Sunday night when the IIC of Talasari Marine Police Station Champabati Soren reached a shop in Udaypur village to stop gambling activities.
Following her arrival, the miscreants soon started to argue with her and a scuffle ensued. The miscreants allegedly locked up the IIC in the shop. Even the driver of the patrolling vehicle was not spared when he tried to stop the miscreants manhandling the lady cop.
As per reports, the driver, Sudhansu Mohanty was attacked and left bleeding at the spot.
After receiving information about the attack on the IIC and the driver, a team from Bhogarai Police Station and Chandaneswar Police Outpost reached the spot and rescued both of them.
The attack on police resulted in the detention of at least 20 persons by the police who are being questioned in this connection. A platoon of police force is also deployed at Udaypur village following the incident to prevent any possible law and order situation.
Speaking about the case, Jaleswar SDPO Dilip Sahu said, “The IIC of Talasari Marine Police Station and her staff got a tip-off about illegal gambling going on at a place. When she came to the spot during patrolling, an argument ensued with the people. The accused even scuffled with the IIC and detained her.”
“We are conducting an inquiry into the case. Appropriate action will be taken as per the law,” Sahu added.
Notably, Udaypur reportedly wore a deserted look following the attack on the police as almost all the male members of the village reportedly fled the village fearing arrest.
